The ISBM International e-Conference 2025, organized by the International Society of Bangladesh-affiliated Microbiologists (ISBM), was successfully held on 6–7 September 2025.
The conference brought together Bangladeshi microbiology researchers, professionals, educators, and students from across the world, offering a unique global platform for advancing modern research, new discoveries, education, employment opportunities, and international collaborations.
Conference Organizing Committee Chair and Professor at the University of Maryland, Dr. Anwar Huq, welcomed more than 175 participants from 17 time zones. He also highlighted the conference theme, “Microbiome: Health and Diseases”, and urged microbiologists, professionals, and educators worldwide to work together.
ISBM General Secretary, Dr. Mizanur Rahman, presented the organization’s diverse activities. He noted that ISBM regularly organizes scientific events, raises awareness about infectious diseases, and provides one-to-one mentorship, technical training, scholarships, fellowships, travel awards, and various research grants.
In the opening session, ISBM’s Chief Patron and world-renowned scientist Professor Rita Colwell, PhD, DSc, delivered a keynote address. An internationally recognized authority in infectious disease and environmental microbiology, she is a former Director of the U.S. National Science Foundation and a recipient of the U.S. National Medal of Science. In her speech, she reflected on her long-standing relationship and collaborative research experiences with Bangladesh, praised ISBM’s activities, and wished the society continued success.
In the plenary lecture, Dr. Tahmeed Ahmed, Executive Director of icddr,b, emphasized the importance of linking scientific innovation with public health. The opening session also featured the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to Major General (Retd.) Professor Dr. ASM Matiur Rahman, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to microbiology, science, and education.
The conference featured five major sessions covering biotechnology, molecular biology, cancer, immunology, environmental science, and bioinformatics, where speakers presented groundbreaking research in microbiology.
• Professor Dr. M.A. Motaleb (East Carolina University, USA) discussed the genetic circuits of the Lyme disease pathogen.
• Dr. Nur A. Hasan (Arias Biosciences, USA) presented new approaches to global health security.
• Dr. Hasan Zaki (University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, USA) explained the importance of pattern recognition receptors in cancer immunotherapy.
• Dr. Hossain M. Azam (University of the District of Columbia, USA) highlighted global advances in environmental microbiology.
• Dr. Fahim Kabir Monjurul Haque (Brac University, Bangladesh) emphasized the importance of monitoring antimicrobial resistance in resource-limited settings.
One of the major highlights was the short-format research presentation competition for young researchers. Emerging scientists showcased work on new vaccines, drug repurposing, microbial genomics, antimicrobial resistance, and bioremediation. Cash prizes awarded to the top 10 young researchers not only recognized their achievements but also encouraged them to pursue future research.
Additionally, an interactive session with Chairs and Heads of Microbiology Departments from leading universities in Bangladesh addressed issues of educational quality, research infrastructure, international collaboration, and career opportunities and challenges for students. The main objective was to provide guidance on how young microbiologists can use their knowledge and skills to advance in careers, research, and entrepreneurship. The discussion highlighted the importance of mentorship, international collaboration, and investment in research.
The ISBM International e-Conference 2025 concluded with a clear message: curiosity, collaboration, and courage are the three pillars of scientific progress, and Bangladeshi microbiologists are ready to lead the discoveries of tomorrow.
